An iconic Richard Neutra Platform House could be yours

Richard Neutra’s famed Platform Houses are among the most unique examples of midcentury-modern architecture. Completed in Sherman Oaks in L.A. between 1962 and 1966, the 17 homes were built on massive platforms that cantilever over Beverly Glen Canyon. Neutra withdrew from the project after a disagreement with the Stone-Fisher development company and the house was completed by architect William S. Beckett in 1965.

Now one of the houses, a two-bedroom property at 3707 Oakfield Drive, is on the market for $2.05 million. Current owner Don M. Goldstein, an architect himself, reimagined the property of the years while still keeping it true to its original design, making it “the most luxurious and complete restoration” of the Platform Homes, according to the listing, held by realtor Michelle Schwartz of The Agency.

Goldstein raised the ceilings and roof lines and added pyramid skylights, solar panels, and a 300-bottle wine cellar, among other touches. The unmistakable black metal exterior is now protected with a 24-gauge Kynar finish.

Goldstein grew up in the San Fernando Valley and used to bike past the Platform Houses, dreaming of own one as adult. “When I bought the house, it had been neglected and fallen into disrepair,” he told Forbes. “All the work I did over the years was to express fully what the structure should be. It was a labor of love. I redid it in a way to make a home for myself.”

Edre Development is offering a first look at renderings of 288 Water Street, a new boutique condominium in Brooklyn’s Vinegar Hill.

Designed by Edre with Issac & Stern Architect, the five-story building is home to just eight three- and four-bedroom apartments. Minimalism is the watchword on the inside and out: Anna Busta’s interiors offer a palette of creamy La Perla limestone, white oak, and polished nickel accents. The exterior features a white porcelain façade, multistory triple-glazed windows, and glass-enclosed balconies. Among the more unique amenities is a Japanese zen garden and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of Lower Manhattan.
